Defence Design

Planning for potential problems during the design phase of a project or undertaking is known as defensive design. Essentially, it is the practice of thinking of every potential way an end user could abuse a device and designing the device to prevent such abuse or to lessen the negative effects. For instance, if it's crucial that a plug be inserted into a socket in a specific orientation, the socket and plug should be made so that doing so is physically impossible. Power outlets are frequently keyed in this way to prevent the mixing of live and neutral currents. Additionally, they are recessed into the wall so that once a connector goes live, it is impossible to touch it.

In software engineering, defensive programming is also referred to as defensive design. A well-known declaration of the necessity of defensive design as well as its ultimate limitations is Murphy's law.

The process of defensive design involves foreseeing all potential ways that an end user might abuse a system or device. Techniques for preventing misuse are put in place during the defensive design process. It will attempt to minimize the negative effects if this is not entirely possible.
