The National Institutes of Design (NIDs) are a group of independent public design universities in India, with the main campus located in Ahmedabad and extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. The primary institute was established in 1961. The locations of the additional NIDs are in Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Jorhat, and Bhopal. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, oversees the NIDs autonomously. NID was founded as a result of numerous forces, both local and global. These forces came together in the late 1950s, and this was a pivotal period for Indian culture and education.
As one of the best educational and research institutions for industrial, communication, textile, and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design, the National Institute of Design is now recognized on a global scale. At the Bachelors's and Master's levels, NID offers professional education programs with five faculty streams and 20 unique design domains.
