THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY (NIFT)
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a renowned institution for fashion education that constantly develops in order to keep up with the shifting consumer trends. The first fashion education institution in India, NIFT was founded in 1986 and has led the way in supplying skilled labor to the textile and apparel industries through its 16 campuses. An Act of the Indian Parliament designated the President of India as the "Visitor" and made NIFT a statutory institution in 2006. The focus has been on teaching students how to apply the fundamental strength of art and culture to the current and vibrant world of fashion.
The second round of testing is a situation test, administered by NIFT. Since it accounts for 20% of the overall weight, this test is very significant in the final selection. A caption and a description of between 50 and 100 words must be included with each model. This 2-hour test is only offered at the NIFT campus.
In this test, candidates must develop a 3D model based on the question asked. They have two hours to conceptualize, build, and submit the model, along with a write-up that will be evaluated by the jury afterward.
Ways to get ready for the NIFT Situation Test:
- Prepare an all-inclusive toolkit with a geometry box, a foot ruler in metal and plastic, a paper-knife, small and large scissors, cello tape, glue, fevicol, all the pins, markers, etc.
- Practice using all kinds of craft supplies. To practice cutting and attaching within the same material category and across the material category, you could work with the following materials.
- Materials to practice with include card stock, thermocol (thick and thin), glaze papers, kite papers, handmade sheets, cellophane, fabric, colored clay, aluminum foil, aluminum sheets, sun packs, foam, straw pipes, moldable aluminum wire, transparency sheets, cotton, rubber sheets, gift wrapping sheets, beads & sequences, etc.
- Always be bound by the workday. Given that you have a 2-hour time limit, it is useless to continue sitting down with a single assignment any longer.
- With the resources at hand, explore the options.
- Working with an experienced mentor in person is the best way to improve your skills; watching a video can only do so for the one model you are watching being made. However, a mentor encourages and develops you into a self-sufficient thinker and explorer with a higher creative quotient, which enables you to respond to any question type.
