NIFT is an autonomous institute ISO Certified and was established in the Ministry of Textiles in the year 1986.
The NIFT Act of the Indian Parliament designated it as a statutory institute in 2006 and gave it the authority to award its own degree.
However, as part of the "National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology" (NMEICT), MHRD, the Government of India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, has begun developing e-content and MOOCs for fashion and technology-related disciplines.
