No, students who belong from arts as well as commerce background, aren’t eligible to study architecture. Only the students who belong from science background or have physics, chemistry and mathematics in their 10+2 exam are only the eligible candidates.

Eligibility criteria to study architecture

  • candidates must qualify national entrance examinations to get admission at any architecture college. Entrance exams such as NATA (national aptitude test of architecture), JEE main (Joint entrance examinations).
  • To sit for NATA or JEE mains, candidates must have combination of physics, chemistry and mathematics in their 10+2 examinations.
  • candidates have to qualify either NATA or JEE main to get admission in the affiliated colleges. In that case candidates have to choose their preferred college first. They have to research about what entrance exam score will be valid for that particular institution. And then the candidates should sit for that particular exam.

Syllabus overview for both JEE Mains and NATA-

  •  Drawing includes memory drawing, shades, shadows, 2D compositions, visualisation, perspective drawing etc. NATA drawing part is totally depend on your creativity and ability. You need to practice more and more to improve your skills and ideas. You need to be creative, because creativity is necessary in this field.
  •  Aptitude test includes Diagrammatic Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Inductive Reasoning, Situational Judgment, Logical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning.
  •  Mathematics include algebra, logarithm, matrices, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, 3D coordination of geometry, theory of calculus, application of calculus, permutation and combination, statistics and probability.
  •  NATA and JEE Mains also includes questions from Physics and chemistry in which class 10-12 studies are important. As well as includes general aptitude test with mathematical reasoning, sets and relations.

Overall syllabus is depend on 10-12th standard mathematics, physics and chemistry. So if you don’t have all these 3 subjects in your 10+2, it would be difficult for you to crack the exam. Also from 2018 CoA declared only students with science background can pursue architecture.

So, if you are from science background and want to pursue architecture, go for it! Or else you can go for B. Des which will be a good career option, obviously if you have interest as well as skills.

Hope this helps!
